Activities
The Student Life Office on campus, in conjunction with student clubs and organizations, are very active in arranging events the demonstrate the theme of civic and community engagement. The student club THON works during the academic year to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State's Children's Hospital, an agency who's mission is to conquer childhood cancer through superior care, comprehensive
support and innovative research. The student service club We Are Penn State M.A.D.E. (Making A Difference Everyday) organizes activities to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand, Toys for Tots, and CityTeam Ministries, to name a few.
Ongoing activities include:
We continuously collect aluminum can pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, and Box Tops for Education (products) and Campbell's Labels for Education (prodcuts) for local elementary schools. Donations to date = 360 Box Tops, 250 Campbell's labels, too many pull tabs to count!
The Overseas Coupon Program collection has just begun, with coupons being sent to military bases overseas.
Knittany Lion Needleworks continues to work with the community (especially the ladies at Granite Farms Estates) to make blankets for Project Linus, caps for newborns, pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, and more! See their website for details.

November 8, 2006 - Children's Book Week
The campus was visited by children from Overbrook Elementary School in Philadelphia for a morning of reading and activity. The children were sent back with over 400 new books for their school library!
October 25-26, 2006 - American Red Cross Blood Drive
The campus rolled up their sleeves to make a difference in the lives of those who need blood.
October 20, 2006 - MADE goes to the Senior Prom!
Members of the club We Are Penn State MADE provided conversation and danced the night away with senior citizens from Fair Acres.
October 20, 2006 - National Alcohol Awareness Week activity
"Dry" drinks and a trivia contest marked this educational event to promote alcohol awareness to students.
October 17-18, 2006 - Food for Thought food drive
Students in the First Year Seminar "Environmental Sustainability and Community Service" teamed up with students in "Research Communications" to hold a food drive for Philabundance. The campus donated 407 food items and $87.43!
October 15, 2006 - AIDS Walk, Philadelphia
A team of staff and students participated in the 8.6 mile walk to raise awareness for AIDS.
October 14, 2006 - Light the Night, in memory of Shawn Meehan
A team of faculty, staff, and students participated in the Light the Night walk in Chesterbrook, PA. The campus raised over $6,600 for the Leukemina and Lymphoma Society. Part of those funds were raised through a silent auction on campus and the students coordinating a Pennies for Patients drive. Shawn Meehan, son of HDFS faculty member Kathy Meehan, lost his courageous battle to leukemia in August at age 26.
October 14, 2006 - Weather Watch for Junior Girl Scouts
Undergraduate researchers Mandy Fossett and Kelly Cunningham organized a one-day program for Junior Girl Scouts to come to campus and complete hands-on activities relating to the weather. The Girl Scouts were able to earn their Weather Watch patch.
October 11, 2006 - Take Back the Night
The HDFS Club sponsored this event, complete with a tshirt clothesline display of shirts made by victims of domestic violence. A speaker and silent auction rounded out the event, raising $1,000 for the Domestic Abuse Project. The HDFS Club also collected unused cell phones to be recycled and donated to victims of domestic abuse.
October 2, 2006 - Kickoff for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The campus set up display tables in each academic building to promote breast cancer health and education. A team from campus also manned a cheering station at the 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk in Philadelphia on October 6, and celebrated Pink Penn State Day on October 11 with a best dressed pink Penn Stater contest and pink food.

April 25, 2006 - Penn Wynne Elementary joins forces with We Are Penn State MADE and Knittany Lion Needleworks

First graders at Penn Wynne Elementary were visited by members of MADE and Knittany Lion Needleworks to make blankets for children in area hospitals. In total, the group made 10 blankets and wrote personal notes for the children receiving the blankets. Way to go Penn Wynne!

The campus group Knittany Lion Needleworks conducted their first blanket drive during Penn State Day and Make A Difference Day. The group was designated as a local honoree in USA Weekend Magazine for their volunteering efforts.
April 15, 2006 - Celebrating Easter at the Ronald McDonald House
Faculty and student members of the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Club visited the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia for fun and conversation with the kids and families that were staying at the House over the weekend.
April 14-15, 2006 - Marcel Carter Memorial Basketball Tournament
The Black Student League at PSUDE sponsored the 13th annual Marcel Carter Memorial Basketball Tournament on campus. The tournament raises money for the Marcel Carter Scholarship Fund and the American Cancer Society. Marcel Carter was an active student on campus that passed away from cancer in 1992.
April 7, 2006 - Volunteering for Spina Bifida Association
Campus volunteers assisted the Spina Bifida Association of the Delaware Valley with their Casino Royale and Live Auction fundraising night.
April 4-5, 2006 - Bringing Geoscience To Girl Scouts

Shana Goldson conducted an independent research project that designed a one-day hands-on science activity for Girl Scouts. The event was held in conjunction with Earth Science Week and World Water Monitoring Day to promote water quality and geoscience careers. She recently presented her results of her community service project at the Undergraduate Exhibition at Penn State University.

The students enrolled in the Civic and Community Engagement Minor joined forces with the entire campus community to make and deliver Huggie Pillows to the cardiac recovery unit at Chester County Hospital.
March 21 and 22, 2006 - Red Cross Blood Drive

The campus opens arms and veins to donate blood to the American Red Cross. The blood drive was held in the Classroom Building Lounge.
March 7-9, 2006 - Alternative Spring Break: Service in Philadelphia

Students stayed local during their spring break to explore the themes of civic and community engagement. The three-day program included a trip to the National Constitution Center, sorting donated clothes for the Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness, packing food kits for Philabundance, reading and playing with kids at the Aardvark Childcare Center, and a final afternoon of bowling to celebrate their service efforts.
February 16, 2006 - Blankets on Fire! for National Make A Blanket Day
The Knittany Lion Needleworks group hosted a blanket drive with the theme of Blankets on Fire as a tribute to our firefighters. Students, staff, and visitors from off campus came to assist in the efforts to create 12 blankets over the lunch hour. We reached our goal and produced 22 fleece-knot and crocheted blankets. Twenty-five completed blankets were dropped off that day, and 47 handmade blankets were contributed by the senior citizens at Granite Farms Estates. This added up to a total donation of 94 blankets for Project Linus.
February 10, 2006 - Serving meals at CityTeam Ministries
Students members of We Are Penn State MADE visited CityTeam Ministries to serve hot meals to low-income families, the homeless, and poor.
January 16, 2006 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Students provided their painting skills to improve the faciilties of two organizations. The Healthy Start Clinic in Kennett Square, PA, provides assistance and care to expecting and new mothers. Mothers' Home in Darby, PA, is an organization that cares for women during and after pregnancy.
